Cascade Apple Isle Sparkling Apple Juice - Police investigation
Cascade Beverage Co is co-operating with ACT Policing in the investigation of throat injuries suffered by a consumer following the alleged consumption of liquid from a 375ml bottle of Cascade sparkling apple juice.
While the cause of contamination is unknown, it is the first such incident associated with a Cascade apple juice product.
The product under investigation, Cascade Apple Isle Sparkling Apple Juice (in the bottle shape pictured below), was manufactured prior to 22 July 2004.
The bottles are now well beyond their 'best before' date and highly unlikely to be currently available on retail shelves.
No other Cascade product has been associated with the investigation of this incident.
While investigations into the incident remain underway, Cascade Beverage Co recommends that consumers do not drink products beyond the 'best before' date.
A consumer information line is available on 1800 641 647 between 9am-5pm Monday-Friday AEST.
Background Information
What product was involved in the incident?
The bottle was a Cascade Apple Isle Sparkling Apple Juice product produced between July 2003 and July 2004. All such products are now beyond the 'best before' date and this is the first such incident associated with this product.
What is Cascade Apple Isle Sparkling Apple Juice made from?
Pressed from the finest quality Tasmanian apples, Cascade Apple Isle is a premium sparkling apple juice made from a traditional Cascade recipe and containing nothing other than lightly carbonated apple juice. Apple Isle has no added sugar and no added flavours or preservatives.
What is the 'best before' date for this product?
Cascade Apple Isle Sparkling Apple Juice has a 2 year shelf life, so this product would have reached it's 'best before' date between June 2005 and June 2006.
What was in the product?
Investigations are currently underway but the throat burns were likely caused by an alkaline substance such as Caustic Soda. It is unclear how the substance came to be in the bottle.
Will Cascade withdraw the product?
This is the first incident associated with the product which is unlikely to still be available on store shelves and now well beyond 'best before' date. Over 4 million bottles of the product have been sold since 2004 without similar incident.
Investigations remain underway to discover the source of the alkaline substance in the bottle - it is unclear whether the substance was added during or post the production and distribution process.
How do I identify the product?
A picture of the bottle shape is attached below. It is highly unlikely that this product is still available on retail shelves.
What should I do if I have the product at home?
